Poison Hemlock
Poison Hemlock (Conium maculatum) tends to form pure stands, probably excluding competitors by chemical warfare (allelopathy). It senesces by midsummer. Despite its abundance, the one butterfly that feeds on it, the Anise Swallowtail (Papilio zelicaon), is now rare at this site.
